Philadelphia Students' Pope Break Could Extend to 5 Days

The Pope’s visit to Philadelphia already has city public school students looking toward a long weekend but that time off could soon be extended.

Philadelphia School District Superintendent William Hite put in a request to close schools on Thursday, Sept. 24, said district spokesman Fernando Gallard.

If approved by the School Reform Commission would turn the three-day break into a five-day hiatus from the classroom since the district is already set to be closed on Sept. 25 due to the Papal visit and on Sept. 23 for the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The SRC is expected to make vote on the extra day off on Aug. 20, said Gallard.
