Philadelphia Police to Name Officers Involved in Shootings

The Philadelphia Police Department says it will begin naming officers in police shootings, reversing a policy that had kept them secret over safety concerns.

Commissioner Charles Ramsey says the department will evaluate each shooting and release names after determining no threats have been made against the officer or his or her family.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Thursday that Ramsey's memo on the policy change will be read to officers at roll call for three consecutive days.

The new policy is in line with a Justice Department recommendation that police "share basic facts and circumstances" within 72 hours of a shooting.

Philadelphia has had more than 400 officer-involved shootings since 2007.

The department was criticized for waiting six months to name the officers involved in the fatal traffic-stop shooting of Brandon Tate-Brown.
