Philadelphia Homeowner Fatally Shoots Intruder in Struggle for Gun, Police Say

The 22-year-old homeowner suffered a graze wound to the head and was being treated at a hospital

Authorities say a Philadelphia homeowner fatally shot a 27-year-old intruder as they struggled over a gun.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday on the 2200 block of S. Darien Street, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. Responding police officers found the alleged intruder had been shot in the head and body, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 22-year-old homeowner suffered a graze wound to the head and was being treated at a hospital, Small said. Police found at least seven spent shell casings at the scene.

The suspected intruder was wearing gloves, which is unusual for this time of year and could indicate that he was indeed trying to burglarize the home, Small said.

Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle flee the scene shortly after the shootings occurred, and it was stopped by police a short time later. The three people in the vehicle were being questioned but were not facing any charges as of early Thursday.

Authorities say there were other adult family members of the homeowner in the residence when the shootings occurred, but no other injuries were reported.
