Philadelphia Holds Memorial Service for Fallen Firefighter Joyce Craig

City leaders will say a final goodbye to Philadelphia Fire Lieutenant Joyce Craig, killed while battling a basement blaze, with a memorial service Monday.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer and Mayor Michael Nutter are expected to speak at the 10 a.m. service being held in the Mayor's Reception Room at City Hall.

The service will close the city's 30 day mourning period for Craig.

Craig, a mother of two and 11-year veteran of the department, died while fighting a fire in the basement of a West Oak Lane home on Dec. 9, 2014. Called a "firefighter's firefighter" by Sawyer, the 36-year-old is the first woman to be killed in the line of duty in the department's 278 year history.

The memorial service will take place as the investigation into Craig's death continues. Department members took her self-contained breathing apparatus to a federal lab for inspection on Friday.
