Philadelphia Region Pauses to Remember Sept. 11

People around the Philadelphia region paused Friday to remember the victims of the Sept. 11 on the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Bucks County was especially hard hit having lost around 20 people on 9/11. An honor and Remembrance Ceremony at Yardley’s Garden of Reflection will be held at 8:30 a.m. before a Reflective Prayer Service at 7:15 p.m. At 6 p.m., officials will dedicate the “Renew. Resolve. Remember.” 9/11 Memorial sculpture in Doylestown.

In Philadelphia, city leaders including Mayor Michael Nutter, Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey will walk from the Fireman’s Hall Museum starting at 9:59 a.m. (the moment the first of the Twin Towers fell) to the Betsy Ross House in Old City. Sawyer urged firemen to take a moment of slice at 9:59 a.m. if they can’t be at the walk.

Nutter will also take part in the Philadelphia Airport’s remembrance of the victims of New York City, Washington, DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 11 a.m.

The Community College of Philadelphia will honor Sgt. Brahim Jeffcoat, a 2002 graduate killed in the Iraq War, during its 9/11 ceremony at 10 a.m.

Students at Lehigh University will plant nearly 9,000 flags across campus to remember victims.

In New Jersey, Rider University will hold a 9/11 Memorial and flag-lowering ceremony at 8:45 a.m.

In Atlantic City, former state and national Miss America pageant winners will perform during the Miss America Organization's "Miss America 9/11 Military Tribute Concert" and luncheon at noon.

And, in Delaware, the DAFB Eagle Firefighters Association will hold a memorial from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Dover Air Force Base.

There are also many other 9/11 remembrances in the entire greater Philadelphia region.
