Woman Killed in Darby Fire

Authorities in Darby say a woman died after she was pulled out of a two-alarm fire in an apartment.

Fire crews in Delaware County who answered the 4 a.m. Sunday call found smoke and flames shooting from the three-story Darby building at 1016 Main Street and quickly spreading between the three units.

Crews quickly found a woman in the second-floor apartment and took her to medics who transported her to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's office identified her Sunday as 26-year-old Dominique Gibson and said she died of smoke and soot inhalation. Family members say Sunday was Gibson's birthday.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries before the blaze was declared under control at 5:53 a.m. The cause remains under investigation.

Investigators suspect it might have been caused by an oven as a heater.

The home dates back to the late 1800's, officials say.
