Family members say Micah Fisher didn't even live inside the Hunting Park home where he was fatally shot early Saturday morning.
They say he just needed a place to stay for the night and was in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
Police say around 4:30 a.m., gunmen fired multiple shots at the home on the 4100 block of North Broad Street. Witnesses tell NBC10 this all started as a fight over past due rent between the landlord, several men and the tenants inside the home.
The witness tells NBC10 that the landlord and men left, but then returned about 20 minutes later with guns. That's when the shooting started.
Fisher woke up after hearing the gunfire, and when he thought the shooting was over, he went to the door and that's when he was shot, that witness said.
"He said 'Don't let me die, I don't want to die' that's the last thing he said," according to the unidentified witness.
Police say Fisher was taken to Temple Hospital and died about six hours later.
Friends say he had just celebrated his birthday earlier this week.
Police are now working to track down the gunmen involved.
