Friends and family are mourning a man who drowned in the Schuylkill River during a music festival in Manayunk Saturday.
Officials say the man, who is in his 50's, was attending the Hidden River Blues Festival at Venice Island Park off Main and Lock streets when he went into the river to cool off. As he was swimming he got swept away in the current.
Rescue crews arrived at the scene around 6:15 p.m.
"It was just like a lot of trucks coming in," said Rose Keeley, a witness. "Five or six fire trucks and helicopters circling around."
They then found the man's body in the river shortly after 7 p.m. and pulled him out. NBC10 crews captured rescuers performing CPR on the man but by then it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Nobody wakes up thinking this could be the last day I live," said Christina Burton, another witness. "He was enjoying himself probably with friends and family. It's terrible."
Officials have not yet released the man's identity.
