Residents in Lancaster County Borough Forced Out Over Sinkhole

Residents of a Lancaster County borough were forced to evacuate their homes after a large sinkhole near two apartment buildings expanded even further.

Police evacuated residents of 12 apartments in Ephrata on Tuesday night after the sinkhole near West Pine Street and Park Avenue grew to 30 feet wide and more than 20 feet deep.

Sgt. Philip Snavely says the sinkhole developed when a 12-inch water main pipe broke under the street at some point overnight on Monday. A large part of the intersection collapsed around 6 a.m., taking part of the street and sidewalk with it.

Police have no timetable for when the evacuation order can be lifted. Snavely says the sinkhole won't be fixed for at least two to three days.

No injuries have been reported.
