For 3rd Time This Year, Inmate Found Hanged at Pennsylvania County Jail

An inmate found hanged at a western Pennsylvania county jail is the third such death reported there this year.

Twenty-year-old Darius Rawls, of Charleroi, was found hanging about 1:15 p.m. Thursday in the Washington County Jail and pronounced dead about an hour later. He was jailed since Sept. 4, when he was arrested on multiple bench warrants and found to possess nearly 900 stamp bags of heroin, cash and a stolen gun.

A coroner has yet to rule how Rawls died, pending toxicology and other tests.

The mother of another inmate found hanged in February has sued the county for his death.

The death of 38-year-old Gregory Michaux, found hanged Sept. 26, is still being investigated internally, by police and the coroner, who is waiting for a toxicology report in that case, too.
