Pennsylvania Councilman Celebrates 50 Years in Office

He's not exactly painting the town red, but a man is celebrating 50 years serving as councilman in a tiny western Pennsylvania borough.

The (Somerset) Daily American
says 84-year-old Dennis Berkey was first elected to council in Paint Borough in 1960. He was voted out of office a few years later, however, but re-appointed to fill a vacancy and has been getting re-elected ever since.

Berkey's tenure has seen the borough offices housed in three different buildings with three different police departments, and more fellow council members than anyone has bothered to count.

Berkey didn't run for re-election this year, but won another four-year term due to write-in votes from the folks in this town of about 1,100 residents.

Paint is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
