Pennsylvania Brothers Get Jail for Deadly Canoeing Accident

Two Pennsylvania brothers have pleaded guilty to boating while drunk and been sentenced to short jail terms in a canoeing accident that killed the fiancée of one of the men.

Twenty-three-year-old Angelo Varischetti and 26-year-old Anthony Varischetti, both of Brockway, were sentenced after pleading guilty to that charge as well as reckless operation of a water craft before an Elk County judge on Monday.

Anthony Varischetti was sentenced to 30 days to six months in jail on work release. His brother received two days in jail.

Their canoe hit a railroad trestle on the Clarion River near Ridgway on May 24, 2014 and capsized.

Angelo Varischetti and 25-year-old Brittany Ann Baird, of DuBois who was Anthony's fiancée  were trapped in currents caused by recent heavy rains. Angelo Varischetti was rescued, but Baird drowned.
