Young Man Walking to Job at Wendy's Struck and Killed in Montgomery County

Police are asking for help finding a hit-and-run driver in a dark-colored pickup truck.

A pickup driver drove off after striking and killing a 24-year-old Montgomery County man on his way to work Friday night, police said.

Donald Purnell died at the scene near the intersection of Pennsylvania Route 100 south and Shoemaker Road in Pottstown. Police said the pickup truck driver fled the scene before officers arrived around 8 p.m. The truck, described as dark-colored, likely has front-end damage.

The truck was last seen heading south on Route 100 toward King Street.

Purnell was on his way to start an 8 p.m. shift at the nearby Wendy's when the pickup driver struck him and pushed him into the path of a second driver who stopped at the scene. The second driver didn't see Purnell on the roadway, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said.

Purnell was headed to work at the adjacent Wendy's when he was struck, investigators said.

Anyone who witnessed Mr. Purnell being struck, was present immediately afterward or has information as to the vehicle and/or driver which first struck Mr. Purnell are asked to phone the Pottstown Borough Police Department at 610-970-6570.
