Philadelphia Area Gains Two Fortune 500 Companies

The Philadelphia region gained two Fortune 500 companies, according to this year’s list released by the magazine Monday. But one of those two has already been acquired and another company will also be exiting the annual benchmark for the nation’s largest companies.

Energy company Airgas (484 on the list) and discount retailer Burlington Stores (500) both joined 10 other local companies bringing the area's entrants to 12 — not including Allentown’s Air Products & Chemicals (288) and PPL (350).

Radnor. Pa.-based Airgas was acquired May 23 by Air Liquide SA, a Paris-based industrial gas manufacturer with its U.S. headquarters in Houston, for $13.4 billion. So its return to the 500 highest-grossing companies in the country will be short-lived.
