DuPont and Dow Chemical in Talks to Merge

Two of the biggest and oldest companies in the American chemical industry are reportedly in talks to combine to make the second largest chemical companies in the world.

Sources told the Wall Street Journal that the merger of Wilmington, Delaware-based DuPont Co. and Midland, Michigan-based Dow Chemical Co. would be followed by a breakup of the company.

The rumored merger surfaces a month after DuPont named its new CEO, Edward Breen. Considered a turnaround expert, Breen oversaw Tyco split into three separate companies while its chief executive, according to the New York Times, and took over the role as shareholders continued to express disappointment in DuPont's performance.
