Pa. Short Cash to Open National Parks

Gov. Tom Corbett's office says it doesn't have the money to reopen national parks as it uses the little free cash it has to keep social services programs running amid a partial federal government shutdown.

Corbett's spokesman Jay Pagni was responding to the Obama administration saying Thursday that it'll allow states to use their own money to reopen some national parks.

Pagni says the administration's goal amid the protracted federal shutdown is to maintain vital services for children and families.

Pagni says the Corbett administration recognizes tourism brings money into local economies. But he says the state doesn't have the cash to reopen parks while it puts off payments to social services providers and backfills missing federal dollars to keep programs running.
