Suspected Drunk Driver Strikes Philly Police Car, 2 Officers Injured

Two Philadelphia police officers were injured after their vehicle was struck by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver.

The crash happened shortly before midnight Wednesday at B Street and Westmoreland Street in Kensington.

According to investigators, the officers were responding to a shots fired call in an unmarked car with its lights and sirens on.

As they crossed the intersection, police say a sedan ran a red light and struck the police vehicle.

After striking the police car, the driver got out of his car and ran away from the scene.

Police say the suspect was captured a short distance away from the scene and initially resisted arrest.

β€œNot only was he under the influence of alcohol, but he also had a suspended driver’s license. So that’s more than likely why he fled from police, ran four blocks and then actually fought with police who had to take him into custody,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The officers suffered minor injuries.

The driver is facing DUI charges.
