Officer Justified in Fatal Shooting: DA

Authorities in central Pennsylvania say a police officer was justified in the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man who tried to grab the officer's gun and lunged at him with a knife.

Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said Tuesday that an investigation determined that Lititz police Officer Joel Hartz could have been badly injured or killed if he had not used deadly force against David Giliberti after responding to a disturbance call on Dec. 21.

Investigators say Giliberti threatened to kill the officer and was stun-gunned but with no effect.

They said Giliberti was a diagnosed schizophrenic who had not been taking his medication.

The officer-involved shooting was the first in the history of the Lititz Police Department.
