Off-Duty Corrections Officer Shoots, Kills Man at His Home

Authorities say a man shot and killed by an off-duty corrections officer outside the latter's home was under a domestic violence restraining order that barred him from contacting the officer's girlfriend.

Mercer County prosecutors say Dominic Neal was found at the officer's Hamilton Township home around 4 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officer told investigators he saw Neal walking up the path to his home and said Neal had one hand on his waistband as he reached out for the door handle.

The officer told Neal to stop but he didn't, investigators said. The officer then fired three or four shots through the glass of his front door.

The officer and his girlfriend were both home but were not hurt. Officials say the officer's girlfriend had a domestic violence restraining order against Neal, prohibiting him from contacting her.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
