A South Jersey mayor finds himself on the wrong side of the law.
Police say Fred Grant of East Greenwich Township was caught speeding down Kings Highway while drunk early Wednesday morning.
Police Chief Barry Jenkins tells NBC10 "Breath test was conducted. Mr. Grant, Mayor Grant had a reading higher than the legal limit. And he was charged with DWI."
Police say Grant was clocked driving 91 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The mayor is calling it a personal matter and declined to talk to NBC10's Rosemary Connors at a township event Thursday night.
He did issue a statement to township employees that reads in part "I want to apologize to all of you for the negativity that the situation will bring to our wonderful town. I made a mistake and will not let this impact my duties as mayor."
Grant is the second politician arrested for driving while intoxicated this week.
