New Jersey officials are accusing 14 gas stations in four New Jersey counties of selling inferior fuel.
The accusations come after inspectors with the Weights and Measures Office checked whether 325 stations were selling fuel with octane levels as advertised.
Inspectors used portable octane testers in the field and any suspect samples were sent off to labs.
The gas stations cited are in Camden, Gloucester, Middlesex and Bergen counties.
Violators face fines up to $1500 for a first violation and could be temporarily shut down for up to 30 days, if convicted of violating the Motor Fuels Act. Weights and Measures violations carry additional penalties up to $5,000 for repeat offenders.
State Consumer Affairs Director Thomas Calcagni says the state wants to be sure motorists are getting their money's worth with some stations charging over $4 per gallon for premium grade gasoline.
