New Jersey has extended its motor vehicle inspection contract with Parsons Corp. for another three years.
The state is paying the company $20.29 per vehicle to check the emissions of vehicles at least 5 years old.
The state inspects about 2 million vehicles a year.
The state renegotiated the pact in 2010 when it did away with mechanical inspections that checked brakes, horns, lights and windshield wipers.
The Star-Ledger of Newark reports Motor Vehicle Commission chief administrator Ray Martinez told the Assembly Budget Committee on Tuesday that the state is considering shifting inspections to private garages in the future.
Martinez said it will take some evaluation.
Motorists in New York and Pennsylvania have their vehicles inspected at private garages.
