Newlyweds Shoplift $1K in Food for Reception: Cops

Couple stole more than $1,000 worth of food from a Wegmans for their wedding reception that was set for the same day, police say

A couple of newlyweds were caught stealing more than $1,000 worth of food for their wedding reception being held the same day, police say.

Arthur Phillips III, 32, and his bride, 22-year-old Brittany Lurch, were arrested Saturday after taking more than $1,000 in food and merchandise from a Wegmans supermarket in Centre Hall, reports the Centre Daily Times.

Police were called to the Wegmans after the alleged theft at about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 18. The wedding reception for which the couple was stealing was set for 5:30 p.m. that same day, police say.

Patton Township police say the couple was captured on surveillance footage loading a shopping cart and leaving the store without paying.

The couple admitted taking the items when arrested. Police say the newlyweds told officers they'd been married a couple days earlier, reports the Centre Daily Times.

Police also found a glass pipe with marijuana residue in it while searching the couple’s car, the newspaper reports.

Phillips and Lurch are each charged with misdemeanor counts, including possession of drug paraphernalia, and are being held on $2,500 bail.
