New Pennsylvania Attorney General Fires 2 of Kane's Top Aides

Pennsylvania's new attorney general is firing two of his predecessor's confidantes, including a former police chief convicted of contempt for snooping through emails about a grand jury's investigation of her.

A spokesman said Thursday that Attorney General Bruce Beemer sent termination letters to Jonathan Duecker, who was former Attorney General Kathleen Kane's chief of staff, as well as supervisory special agent Patrick Reese, her driver.

The spokesman says the prosecutor's office can't say why they were fired, because of confidentiality rules concerning personnel matters.

The firings come two days after Beemer was confirmed and sworn in to succeed Kane, a Democrat who resigned Aug. 17 after being convicted of perjury and other offenses.

Phone messages left at home listings for Duecker and Reese weren't immediately returned. Reese is appealing his conviction.
