Mechanical Failure to Blame for Deadly Tandem Bike Crash in New Jersey: Police

Police say a New Jersey man died after he was thrown from a tandem bicycle that had experienced a mechanical failure over the weekend.

Officials said Tuesday that Paul Bertinato, of Dumont, was found unresponsive on the ground on Sunday afternoon in Tenafly. They say he had suffered head and facial injuries.

Officials say officers and a family member administered CPR on Bertinato. He later died at a hospital.

Police determined that he and another rider had been riding the bicycle when it experienced a mechanical failure and crashed into a curb.

Officials say both riders were wearing helmets and were thrown from the bike. Bertinato fell into a curb and a utility pole.

The other rider suffered minor injuries.
