A New Jersey police officer accused of trying to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex has been released from jail.
The judge ordered 47-year-old Howell Sgt. Richard Conte released Tuesday with the condition that he can only leave his home for court appearances and doctor's appointments.
Conte was charged with second-degree attempted luring Sept. 6 after authorities say he tried to meet the girl in Toms River. The girl was actually an undercover police detective.
Howell Police Chief Andrew Kudrick says Conte has been suspended without pay.
Conte has served in the police force since 1997, and he previously was the volunteer fire chief for the South Wall Fire Department.
His attorney could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
