New Jersey Parking Lot Collapse Remains a Mystery

Officials are trying to determine what caused the top deck of a parking garage to collapse in Secaucus.

The deck was being cleared by a snowplow when it collapsed Saturday morning. Authorities say the snowplow operator escaped serious injury.

An unoccupied sport utility vehicle in the garage was destroyed. Other people who had parked there were able to safely remove their vehicles later.

Michael Seeve, the president of Mountain Development Corp., which manages the property, tells The Record  newspaper common sense would suggest it was the weight load from snow and water.

Seeve says it's not known when the garage will reopen.

The garage mostly serves guests and staff at a nearby hotel and workers at a multistory office building.
