New Jersey Officials Say State Will Meet Federal Travel ID Deadline

New Jersey has about 3 years before a federal deadline to update its driver's licenses and other ID cards, or else residents won't be able to board airplanes.

The state has already been given extensions to comply by October 2020.

An official with the state Motor Vehicle Commission tells The Press of Atlantic City the deadline will be met and that residents shouldn't rush out to get passports or other federal forms of identification.

The new IDs required under the 2005 REAL ID act will include security features to prevent tampering as well as a chip or bar code that can pull up biographical data.

New Jersey is one of 21 states to be given extensions.
