New Jersey Native Found Shot Dead in Burlington, Vermont

Police in Vermont are investigating the shooting death of a 23-year-old man originally from Ocean County, New Jersey.

Kevin DeOliveria was found dead by friends in his home along Green Street in Burlington, Vt. Saturday evening, Burlington Police said.

Family of the Manahawkin, N.J. native had not heard from him and asked his friends to check on his well-being.

Officials said he had been shot more than once, but they did not release how man times or where he had been hit. They are classifying his death as a homicide.

DeOliveria was an honors student at Southern Regional High School, lifeguard in Long Beach Township and student at the University of Vermont, according to his obituary. He moved to Vermont five years ago.

Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling said Monday the department had 20 investigators and prosecutors working on the case. He also spoke with DeOliveria's mother.

"She wants all to know that she loved him very much and the family was supporting him as he worked to build a life away from his original home, here in Burlington," he said in a statement.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday in Manahawkin.
