New Jersey Counties Challenge Reform to State Bail System

New Jersey officials are weighing the state's bail reform efforts after a challenge from an organization representing the state's counties.

The Council on Local Mandates is set to hear arguments on Wednesday in Trenton after the New Jersey Association of Counties challenged the changes.

The state's bail system was overhauled at the start of the year to rate suspects to determine their security risks, drastically cutting down on cash bail.

The counties say that the change creates additional costs without setting up a way for them to recoup them without raising taxes.

New Jersey's attorney general office argues that the overhaul was created after a constitutional amendment voted on by residents and that gives the state the power to make the change. [[238427591, C]]
