NJ Bottle Maker to Close, Cutting 290 Jobs

The last bottle manufacturer in Salem is set to close this fall, eliminating 290 jobs and ending a 150-year tradition of making glass in the southern New Jersey city.

Ardagh Glass announced the decision Wednesday to its employees, city officials and the public.

The facility is to be shut down on Oct. 15.

Ardagh's 15 other North American plants are to remain open.

Ardagh took over the plant two years ago when it bought Anchor Glass.

It continued to operate in its blue painted building in Salem.

Salem County Freeholder Dale Cross tells The South Jersey Times that he wants to see if there is any way to persuade the company to stay.
