New Jersey Lawmakers to Vote on Bail Overhaul

State lawmakers are scheduled to vote on a pair of measures that would overhaul the state's bail system.

The changes going before the Assembly on Monday were designed to allow judges to keep those deemed dangerous behind bars as they await trial. They also would allow for the release of low-level suspects, even if they don't have money for bail.

Gov. Chris Christie called lawmakers in last week for a special session to demand they take action by Monday. That would be enough time to get a constitutional amendment on the issue on the November ballot.

The amendment would undo the state's right to bail. A second component is a law detailing other bail-system changes.

The Senate has approved both measures already.
