Two women and a man are recovering but alive after escaping a house fire in North Philadelphia.
The fire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday at a home on the 900 block of West Huntingdon Street.
Investigators say an elderly couple was inside the home at the time. The couple’s younger neighbor ran into the house to help but became trapped inside as well.
Firefighters and police officers quickly arrived at the scene. Neighbors and officers managed to get the elderly man and younger woman out of the home but the man's wife was trapped on the second floor. That’s when Ali Alfie, another neighbor, stepped in to help.
“We were screaming, ‘Miss, just come out! Just jump out,’” Alfie said. “When she finally jumped out, I was able to break her fall. The only thing she walked away with was a scraped leg so it was a blessing.”
The elderly woman was treated at the scene and is expected to be okay. The elderly man and younger woman were taken to Temple University Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation
Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 2:20 a.m. Officials continue to investigate the cause.
