Pennsylvania Borough Mayor Charged With Stealing $8K From Social Club Resigns

The mayor of an eastern Pennsylvania borough has resigned five months after he was charged with stealing $8,000 from a fire company social club.

Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. resigned on Tuesday. The borough council nominated Councilman John Samus to complete Strye's mayoral term through December 2017.

Strye was charged in April with stealing from the social club of Vigilance Hose Company while serving as its president from 1987 to 2013.

Strye announced his resignation in a letter to borough council President Dan Chiavaroli. The letter cites Strye's "issue" but doesn't admit any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors last month said they would recommend Strye for an accelerated rehabilitation program if he resigned. A felony theft charge would be cleared from Strye's record. [[238427591, C]]
