Nazareth Mayor Accused of Stealing From Fire Company

The mayor of an eastern Pennsylvania borough says he has "no intention" of resigning despite a felony charge stemming from his role as president of a local fire company.

Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr. surrendered Tuesday to police at a district judge's office in the Northampton County borough and was freed on unsecured bail.

Prosecutors said the charges involve allegations that $8,000 was taken from the social club of the Vigilance Hose Company, which Strye headed for 27 years. His successor, Troy Keenhold, said no money donated to the fire department itself is missing.

Strye says he is cooperating fully with investigators but wishes that fire company officials had come to him after finding a financial discrepancy. He said "This should have been handled in-house, not the courthouse."
