Local civil rights leader, journalist and former president of the Philadelphia NAACP Jerome Whyatt "Jerry" Mondesire will be laid to rest next week.
The civil rights leader died at a Philadelphia hospital Sunday night.
A viewing will be held for Mondesire Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Louise E. & William W. Savin Funeral Home on N 12th Street in Philly's Poplar neighborhood. Mourners are then invited to a celebration of life ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at Bright Hope Baptist Church further up N. 12 Street in North Philly.
Family didn't reveal exact plans for internment.
Mondesire passed away Sunday evening with his family and close friends by his side following a brain aneurysm, reported Philly.com.
Born in Harlem, New York in 1949, Mondesire was a journalist and activist. He was a City Desk Editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer, writer for the Baltimore Sun, and owner of the Philadelphia Sun newspaper. Mondesire took over the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP in 1991 where he remained until his suspension in 2014 for allegedly misusing funds. He was never charged with any crime.
In lieu of flowers, Mondesire's loved ones asked for donations to Philly ACT-SO, NAACP Philadelphia Youth Council or the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists' J. Whyatt Mondesire Scholarship Fund.
