Monkeys Rescued From Pa. Home in Sanctuary

Two monkeys rescued along with about 50 other wild and domesticated animals from a central Pennsylvania home last month are now residents of the Lone Star State.

Officials said Thursday that the Japanese macaque, also known as a snow monkey, and the vervet monkey are living at the 186-acre Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in Dilley, Texas.

Police and animal welfare authorities removed the monkeys from the Carlisle-area home on Jan. 31 along with cats, dogs, an albino groundhog and a de-scented skunk.

Investigators said the macaque was found in a dog kennel in a garage and the vervet was in a 5-by-5-foot cage.

A police officer responding to an unrelated complaint discovered the animals.

Police said the house was in deplorable condition and deemed it uninhabitable.
