A New Jersey Transit train struck and killed a star high school soccer player Sunday night.

A New Jersey Transit spokesman says 18-year-old Jacob St. Phard was hit on Sunday night by a train that was heading to Morrisville, Pennsylvania, for maintenance. Officials don't know why St. Phard was on the tracks and said the teen was trespassing just west of Hamilton Station.

NJ.com reports St. Phard was a senior at Notre Dame High School on Lawrenceville Road in Lawrence Township and had recently committed to play soccer for Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

The school acknowledged the death on its website and said counselors wold be available to student and staff.

Only three crew members were on board the train at the time and none of them were injured.

Northeast Corridor NJ Transit trains experienced 90-minute delays between Princeton Junction and Trenton due to the crash.
