Memorial Service Planned for Former Governor Scranton

A memorial service is scheduled for William Warren Scranton on Aug. 14 in the northeastern Pennsylvania city named after his family.

Gov. Tom Corbett's office said Thursday that the service will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Covenant Presbyterian Church on Madison Avenue. It'll be open to the public.

Scranton, a former Pennsylvania governor, presidential candidate and ambassador to the United Nations, died Sunday in California. He was 96.

Corbett has ordered all Pennsylvania state flags lowered to half-staff until Aug. 15 to honor Scranton.

Scranton, a Republican, was elected to Congress in 1960. He served one term before he was elected as Pennsylvania's 38th governor in 1962.

He lost the GOP presidential nomination in 1964 as a liberal alternative to conservative Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater.
