Mediation Under Way In Delaware Student Suicide Lawsuit

A judge is overseeing mediation in a lawsuit filed by the family of a Newark High School student who hanged himself hours after talking to a school counselor and acknowledging a previous suicide attempt just days earlier.

Wednesday's mediation involves a lawsuit filed against Christina School District officials in 2010.

A judge ruled for school officials in 2012, saying they owed no duty to the boy and couldn't be held liable. The state Supreme Court overturned that decision, pointing to alleged violations of requirements to notify a parent or guardian of a student's crisis situation.

A classmate reported in 2009 that the boy was contemplating suicide. Several hours after meeting with the counselor the next day, the boy was sent back to class.

He then went home and hanged himself.
