The commissioners of a northeastern Pennsylvania county have barred access to a dilapidated mausoleum that is set to be sold for back taxes later this year.
The decision by the Luzerne County commissioners has prompted some relatives of those interred in the Plains Township facility to protest.
But the commissioners say they can't let anybody inside the neglected property because it's unsafe, with a roof about to collapse, toxic mold and bugs.
County officials say they haven't been able to contact the owners of The Good Shepherd Mausoleum and Cemetery near Wilkes-Barre. It's scheduled for a public auction because the owners owe $14,715 in taxes.
The county says it can't fix up the property because it's privately owned. Some groups are hoping local residents will step in to buy the property.
