Massive Fire Burns at Former Flexible Flyer Sled Plant

Fire hit four alarms; no injuries reported

A massive four-alarm fire burned out of control at the former headquarters of the S.L. Allen & Co. in the Kensington section of Philadelphia Monday night.

Flames could be seen shooting from the top floor of the six-story warehouse located at 5th and Tioga Streets. The fire began around 10 p.m. Monday night, according to fire officials.

The S.L. Allen & Co. used to manufacture the famous Flexible Flyer sled. Most recently, the first floor of the building was being used to sell used appliances, according to neighbors.

Officials evacuated 30-40 people from the area and closed several streets around the building for safety.

Rail lines used by SEPTA, NJ Transit and Amtrak run next to the building. The fire did not have an impact on rail service.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Investigators are still searching for the cause of the blaze.
