Organic Substances Found Inside Abandoned Building

Police are trying to identify the "organic substances" that were found inside a vacant Philadelphia building.

Police arrived at an abandoned building on the 900 block of Spring Garden Street around 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday after receiving reports of a strange smell. Once inside, officers discovered several substances on the second floor of the building.

Police initially told NBC10 the substances were marijuana, mushrooms and drug-making chemicals. They later reported however that they were not marijuana plants and instead described them as "organic substances." They continue to investigate.

A person of interest in connection to the substances was taken into custody. He or she has not been officially charged.

The building is located next to Milton Hershey’s first candy business. Hershey was a philanthropist and founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company.
