Investigators have identified a man who died while in police custody.
Daniel Wichterman, 29, was arrested in Northeast Philadelphia on suspicion of drunk driving around 3 p.m. Friday. Hours later, he was dead.
Authorities said they brought Wichterman to a detention center at 750 Race St. in Center City around 3:45 p.m. Friday.
He sat in a cell awaiting a breathalyzer test until officers went to check on him around 10 p.m. -- several hours after he arrived at the center, police said.
Wichterman was found unresponsive in the cell he was sharing with another inmate. The officers who found him said he appeared to have stopped breathing, according to reports. A nurse at the scene performed CPR on him and medics were notified.
Wichterman was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:31 p.m., investigators said.
The cause of his death is unknown and an investigation is underway.
