Cops ID Suspect in Disability Check Theft

He is being held in a Camden County jail.

Police have identified a man who they say is responsible for stealing a check from a disabled veteran.

In December of 2010, a 27-year-old veteran of the US Marine Corps was waiting for a disability check of $44,339.

When he never received the check, investigators say he contacted the US Treasury Department. The Treasury discovered that the check was deposited at a Bensalem bank on December 15th.

Police say that Jonathan Gerence, a man in his 40s, opened an account in the veteran’s name by using a counterfeit driver's license.

Over the course of six days, Gerence allegedly withdrew over $22,000 from the account.

Gerence also has an arrest warrant for identity theft in Willistown Township in Chester County.

He is currently being held in a Camden County jail.
