Man Shot, Killed at Philly Playground: Cops

Police say a 43-year-old man was shot and killed at a Philadelphia playground.

Police are investigating a fatal shooting at a Philadelphia playground.

It happened Monday at the Belfield Recreation Center at 21st and Conlyn Street in the Logan section of the city. Police say a 43-year-old man was shot multiple times in the neck, face and head. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:37 p.m.

Police say the playground is a known drug location but was filled with children at the time of the shooting because of the warm weather.

"This could have been a lot worse just due to the number of people in the playground," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Investigators are searching for a man, around 5-foot-7, dressed in all black clothing who they say fled on foot after the shooting. They also say they have one witness.

The playground is located about a block away from La Salle University. Some students say they heard the gunfire.

"We were just outside on the stoop hanging out," said La Salle sophomore Pat Knaus. "All of a sudden we see 15 cop cars fly by."

"I was having a good day then I got a phone call from my grandma crying to me saying my cousin got shot," said the victim's cousin, DJ Johnson. "It's real tough. My family has been taking it hard right now."

Johnson says his cousin was a barber and a hardworking family man.

"He's got kids, family man, hard worker, cut hair," said Johnson. "Everybody has hardships every now and then but at the end of the day he tried to make things right."
