A man died from a gunshot to the chest inside an apartment in the 2300 block of Haverford Road, Saturday, July 29, 2017.

A man who two witnesses said was in a red hoodie ran from the apartments toward Wynnewood Road. It was not immediately known if he was captured by police.

Brian Hoffman, whose backyard is along a shared alley with the rear of the apartments, was helping his next-door neighbor put some mulch down when he heard the two gunshots. He called 9-1-1.

"We thought at first it was fireworks," Hoffman said. "But then I said, 'I think that's gunshots."

He said some yelling followed the gunfire, which he said sounded like it came from the second floor of the apartment building.

"I couldn't make out what they were saying," he said. "It was two men yelling."

The shooting shocked him.

"It's not something you expect around here," he said. "We called it a day with the yardwork."
