Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Death of 92-Year-Old Woman

A northern New Jersey man who killed a 92-year-old woman during a robbery at her home has been sentenced to 30 years in prison with no chance for parole.

Forty-year-old Daniel Rios of Elizabeth had pleaded guilty in June to felony murder charges stemming from the May 2012 death of Annette Hempel. He was sentenced Friday.

Union County prosecutors say Rios rang the doorbell of the first-floor apartment where Hempel lived alone in Elizabeth and pushed his way into her residence.

When Hempel started screaming, Rios put his hand over her mouth and brought her to the ground in an effort to silence her, leading to her death by asphyxiation. He then stole approximately $360 in change before fleeing.

Hempel's body was discovered by a family member later that afternoon.
