Man Exonerated After 25 Years in Prison Sues Philadelphia & 11 Police Officers

A man found not guilty last month in his retrial of the 1991 rape and murder of a 77-year-old woman is suing the City of Brotherly Love and 11 police officers who investigated the case.

Anthony Wright, now 44, received a life term in the slaying of his neighbor Louise Talley, who was raped and repeatedly stabbed.

She was found in her Philadelphia home. Wright's conviction was reversed in 2014 after DNA evidence pointed to a former Philadelphia-area crack addict who died in a South Carolina prison.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday accuses police of writing a false confession and coercing Wright to sign it without reading it.

The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages. A city spokesman says officials are reviewing the lawsuit. A police spokeswoman says they don't comment on active litigation.
