Man Arrested for Climbing Sandy-Ravage Seaside Coaster

Police have apprehended a man who apparently climbed the storm-ravaged Seaside Heights roller coaster with duffle bags full of food and toiletries.

Police have arrested a man they say climbed a storm-ravaged Seaside Heights roller coaster Tuesday morning.

Police say a 38-year-old surfer/climber from Lavallette, New Jersey was in a canoe when he stopped at the submerged Jet Star Roller Coaster. The man then climbed the coaster with 3 or 4 duffle bags full of food, clothing and toiletries, according to authorities.

After receiving a call, Seaside Police, New Jersey SWAT, NJ State Police Marine Division and the Coast Guard rushed to the scene to find the man at the top of the coaster.

It was a Seaside sergeant that was able to talk the man down on a cellphone.

He was immediately placed under arrest and will be charged with Criminal Trespassing. He could face additional charges, police tell NBC10.

The Jet Star Roller Coaster was swept away during Superstorm Sandy. The steel remnants have become one of the iconic images of the storm.
